Abide Designs is a Lakewood Ranch interior design studio creating elevated, livable homes for busy families. Led by our founder Kati Ramage, we blend thoughtful design with a personal, organized approach that makes every space feel unmistakably yours.
I’ve been thinking about the hours after dinner. The kids are still talking, someone makes another pot of coffee, and nobody really wants the night to end. It’s nice when your home can make room for that.

Maybe your kids now bring partners home. Maybe a parent visits for longer stretches. The office that once held a desk and little else suddenly needs to do more. You don’t necessarily need to add a bedroom, but you do need to look honestly at how someone would use the space overnight.
Can they close a door? Is there somewhere to put a suitcase without stepping around it? Can they read in bed, charge their phone, and find the bathroom without waking the whole house? These aren’t glamorous questions, but they’re the ones that make a guest feel at home.

I wouldn’t ask a busy family to keep a room untouched for the handful of nights someone visits. A home office can have a comfortable daybed. A den can have a sleeper sofa that you’ve actually tested, with a small table and a good lamp beside it. If the layout allows for privacy and the furniture serves both purposes well, that room can work hard every day and still be ready for company.
This is something we think about often when designing homes for our clients throughout Sarasota and Bradenton. A beautiful room is one thing, but a room that can accommodate overnight guests, work-from-home days, and everything in between is so much more valuable. The best spaces don’t make you choose between how you want your home to look and how you need it to function.
The same thinking applies when you have more space. In our Navy Guest House, we designed a place where family could gather, relax, and stay overnight. The sleeping space matters, of course, but so does having somewhere to settle in together before bed and enjoy a slow morning afterward.
Once someone has a comfortable place to sleep, I start thinking about how they’ll use the rest of the space. If they wake up before everyone else, can they get a glass of water without searching through someone else’s cabinets? Is there a place to sit and ease into the morning?
In this guest house, the kitchen gives visitors a little independence, while the navy cabinetry and open shelves make it feel connected to the rest of the home. It’s a space they can actually enjoy spending time in.

And then there’s the bathroom. I love that we gave it so much personality. The graphic blue-and-white walls make an impression, but the clean vanity, good lighting, and fresh towels still make it easy for guests to use. It’s a small room, and guests might only be in there for a few minutes at a time. That doesn’t mean it has to be an afterthought.

Between snowbirds arriving and families flying into Sarasota and Tampa for the holidays, this stretch from fall through the new year is when a guest space either earns its keep or quietly reminds everyone why it’s easier to book a hotel. A few simple changes now, like a better lamp, a luggage rack, or blackout shades, can make a real difference before anyone arrives.
If your guest room needs more than a quick refresh, the new year is the perfect time to start planning. We’re booking design projects for early 2027 throughout Sarasota, Lakewood Ranch, Bradenton, Anna Maria Island, and the Tampa area. At Abide Designs Interiors, we believe a home should be able to hold the people you love for more than just a dinner. Fill out our contact form and let’s talk about what your home needs, so the next time someone asks if they can just stay over, the answer is an easy yes.
